Lake Illawarra Police have urged the community not to lose sight of the meaning of ANZAC Day tomorrow, with officers geared up for a busy day of patrols.
Chief Inspector Craig Ireland said history has proven alcohol-related violence does occur on ANZAC Day, with police set to target anti-social behaviour across the region.
“We’ve got a lot of police tasked for an operation tomorrow and our main focus is making sure people can enjoy the day safely and in a secure environment,” he said.
“We don’t want to see any anti-social behaviour or alcohol related incidents by a few people ruining it for the great majority who are there to have a good time.”
As well as patrolling licensed premises in the afternoon, police will be out in force on our roads, with a large contingent of police conducting roadside breath tests.
“It’s a busy day on the roads full stop and we are hoping to keep drink driving to a minimum,” Chief Inspector Ireland said.
“On the[main] roads and the backstreets [there will be] RBT operations, for anyone who wants to risk drink-driving they’ll probably be caught.”
Double demerits also returned at 12.01am on Wednesday, as part of Operation Go Slow, which will run until 11.59pm on Sunday.
Chief Inspector Ireland also said security was at the forefront of police officer’s minds, and that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure the public’s safety.
“obviously with overseas events recently it’s at the forefront of our mind, and we’ve put particular mitigation strategies in to try and make things as safe as possible,” he said.
