THE exciting ‘T20 cricket’ equivalent of golf is making its way to Wollongong for the first time.

Blitz Golf, an emerging format of the sport, is in the 3rd round of its season, and is set to take place at the Wollongong Golf Club on Friday December 16.

The variant of the sport packs all the excitement of a typical multi-day event into a couple of action-packed hours of entertainment, and is set to host some of Australia’s finest golfing talents.

Founder and organiser of the event, Simon Zybek, is expecting a strong turnout to the Wollongong round.

“Much like cricket has managed to transform a five day game into just one, we’ve done the same here by packing four days worth of golf into a couple of hours”, Zybek said.

“Not only that, but we’re surrounding the golf with everything that makes an event entertaining.

“Non-stop music, competition, activities for kids … it’s going to be a great day.”

The event is set to feature emerging golf talents mixed with golfing pros, all looking to accumulate points as the competition passes the halfway mark.

Wollongong born Matt Millar will be the one to beat, having taken his 3rd Blitz title in the previous event at Howlong Golf Club in Riverina.

Millar is expected to be in the feature pack at the event with fellow Australian golfers Lincoln Tighe and Justin Warren.

Other Blitz Golf pros expected to be in Wollongong include James Grierson, Tahnia Ravnjak and Antonio Murdaca.

Simon Zybek encourages locals to get down to Wollongong Golf Club and get involved in the fun of the day.

“It’s a laid back environment, but the players are still able to thrive,” Zybek said.

“Last week we had fans bantering and heckling this one pack all day, which you’d think would annoy them, but the players feed off it, they even give it back.

“It’s golf done differently at the end of the day.”

This is the 12th event in the short history of Blitz Golf and the first time Wollongong has hosted it.

Players will be looking to accumulate points in these last few rounds in the hopes of progressing to the final in Adelaide on the 6th of January, which is the ultimate showcase for Blitz Golf.

Zybek is hopeful this week won’t be the last time the event hits the courses of the Illawarra region.

“If it goes as well as we hope it will then Wollongong will be a part of the permanent calendar.”

Tickets to the event are free and can be obtained on the Blitz Golf website.
