A former Nowra woman has faced court for the first time, charged with committing around $370,000 worth of fraud while working for a government welfare organisation in the state’s south.

Carly Myranda Regan, 29, who now lives on the Central Coast, faced Nowra Local Court on Monday, after she allegedly established a sophisticated fraud scheme while working as an ‘IT project officer’ at not-for-profit government welfare organisation, Waminda.

Police will allege Regan purchased 163 mobile phones between March and September 2018, 158 of which were delivered to her home address and a further five that were delivered to a hotel in Sydney where she stayed for a period of time.

In court documents, police allege Regan on-sold the mobile phones through various online marketplaces and social media sites, before officers attached to South Coast Police District started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding transactions.

As a result of those transactions, police allege in court documents Waminda paid a telecommunications company approximately $59,000 in monthly contract charges, a further $93,000 to pay out contracts and more than $218,000 for the handsets.

Following extensive inquiries, about 10.30am on November 18, the woman was arrested at Wyong Police Station and charged with dishonestly obtain property by deception.

Regan, who now lives on the Central Coast in the suburb of Lake Haven, did not enter a plea to the charge on Monday.

It’s understood Regan began her employment with Waminda, an Aboriginal women’s health service, in June 2017 before finishing with the organisation in November 2018.

The matter will return to court early next year.
