A Fairy Meadow man was allegedly busted behind the wheel by Wollongong Highway Patrol over the holiday period, despite having racked up more than 500 demerit points in the past decade.

When asked to produce his licence after a routine traffic stop, the 43-year-old handed over his Queensland Proof of Age card which allegedly had the top ‘Proof of Age Card’ words cut off.

This card displayed an expiry date of 2023. When questioned about the card, police allege the man said it was his licence, and that his bird had eaten the top of it.

Doubtful about the card produced, police ran further inquiries, allegedly finding the man previously held a NSW Learner licence which expired in 2005, as well as a lengthy traffic record.

Police ordered a full traffic history on the man, which allegedly revealed he had amassed a staggering 562 demerit points in an 11 year period.

He will appear in court later in the year charged with unlicensed driving, and producing a card calculated to deceive.
