There’s one burger joint that jumps to mind when people think of Wollongong.
Unsurprisingly, iconic Wollongong eatery Chicko’s has won the title of Best Burger in the Illawarra, after a joint competition run by The Illawarra Star and Delicious magazine.
Chicko’s won in a landslide, after Illawarra Star readers nominated their favourite burger place from across the region, which included Sneaky Burger, His Boy Elroy and Culture Sauce.
An Illawarra institution, Chicko’s is known for its enormous chicken schnitty burgers, which can feed even the hungriest or most hungover man.
Located in both Wollongong and Figtree, you’re guaranteed to see a swarm of people waiting for a delicious burger at any time of day.
The Wollongong shop opened in 2006, but Chicko’s has been gracing the Illawarra with its gorgeous, crispy chickens since the 1980s.
Many would be surprised to know Chicko’s origins began in Dapto back in 1987 as a popular take away store known as Charcoal Chickens.
With a huge array of chicken schnitzel burgers, ranging from the simple “original” with lettuce and mayonnaise, to the “Scallopini” dripping in creamy mushroom sauce and nestled in a soft while roll, it’s not hard to see why Chicko’s is a crowd favourite.
Ask a few people why they love the burgers so much and you’ll hear everything from “its just iconic” to “the burgers are bloody enormous” and of course “it’s just so fresh”.
When NBA star Lamelo Ball played for the Hawks, two legendary worlds collided, with Ball constantly spotted making a late night trip to the institution.
While Chicko’s was always known for its burgers, it can now wear the official winning crown with pride.
