A young woman has indicated she will plead guilty to assault, despite initially denying allegations she and a friend attacked a Bulli father on a night out, after a series of disturbing Snapchat videos of the alleged incident surfaced online.
Best friends Casey Holmes and Polly Powell, both 19, were charged over the alleged attack last year, after Holmes posted several 10-second clips to social media, laughing at the injuries they’d allegedly inflicted on 57-year-old Bulli man Brad Quirk.
Holmes, also of Bulli, was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray on October 1 last year, just two days after the videos of the alleged assault went viral on Facebook, racking up more than 90,000 views in just a few days.
Powell, of Wombarra, was charged with affray and common assault some days later.
The girls pleaded not guilty to the charges and were due to face a hearing next week, however, Holmes’ lawyer faced Wollongong Local Court on Friday, where she indicated her client would be pleading guilty to the assault charge and that police had agreed to withdraw the affray charge.
“Miss Holmes will be pleading guilty to the assault charge,” her lawyer told the court.
Holmes will now face court for sentencing in December.
In the videos posted online, Mr Quirk looks dazed and confused, with blood and bruises covering his face as he stumbled through Thirroul’s William Woodward Park.
Police will allege Mr Quirk had been sitting on a bench in the park about 8.45pm on
September 28, when he was assaulted by Holmes and Powell.
