Dapto man Cameron Williams faced Wollongong Local Court on Thursday, after police allegedly found two imitation firearms, a shortened rifle, semiautomatic pistol, ammunition, shotgun cartridges, knuckle dusters, steroids and ‘ice’ in the home he shared with his sick parents.
The 33-year-old was refused bail by Magistrate Jillian Kiely on Thursday, despite his defence lawyer arguing for his release due to to care for his parents. who were both “elderly and sick” and depended on him for daily support.
In documents tendered to the court on Thursday, police allege they arrived at Williams’s house on Wednesday to serve him with a Firearms and Weapons Prohibition Order before they searched his property to ensure his compliance.
As they were searching, an officer asked Williams whether there were any firearms on the property, before he allegedly told them there was “a gel blaster in the shed”.
During a search of the shed, police allegedly located the gel blaster under his desk, which police allege in documents “appeared to be modified with a metal barrel fitted”.
Williams was immediately placed under arrest before police continued to search the rest of his home.
Nearby the gun, police allegedly found a small bag with a crystal substance inside. According to court documents, when questioned about it, Williams allegedly said “I’m a crackhead. It’s ice. It’s mine for personal use”.
In the documents police claim the drug weighed 0.9 grams, with a street value of $300.
In searching the rest of the property police allegedly found two boxes of large air rifle primers and two more resealable bags of what appeared to be ice. It’s also alleged police found a “pulled apart” Airsoft pistol, which Williams allegedly said he found at “a council pick-up”.
In the documents, police also allege they found a third gel blaster, a .22 calibre rifle, a shot gun and other parts, ammunition, three 400mL vials of steroids and a set of knuckle dusters.
Following the search, Williams was taken to Lake Illawarra police Station, where he was charged with 10 offences including possess unauthorised pistol, not keep firearm safely, possess prohibited drug and possess shortened firearm without authority.
In court on Thursday, police prosecutor Sergeant Amelia Wall said each of the weapons had been “modified” to make them “more menacing”.
“The community has a particular interest in these types of matters, ”she said.
“The community needs to be protected from people like Mr Williams who possess unauthorised firearms.”
Magistrate Kiely said that if convicted, Williams was facing a “significant period” in prison and refused the application for bail.
Williams will remain in custody until he next appears in court in July.
