Brandon Paul Murray: DV accused allegedly bombarded woman with messages via bank transfers

A magistrate has scorned a man accused of domestic violence for “not taking no for an answer” after allegations he repeatedly sent a South Coast woman messages via money transfer descriptions.

Australia's domestic violence crisis

A Flinders man days out from a hearing into a string of domestic violence matters has been chucked behind bars for allegedly bombarding a woman with messages via bank transfer descriptions.

Brandon Paul Murray, outfitted in a tie-dyed shirt, fronted Wollongong Local Court through audio-visual link on Tuesday seeking bail after 11 fresh charges of contravening an apprehended violence order against a woman he had an 18-month relationship with.

Murray is set to appear in Batemans Bay Local Court on Thursday for a hearing into eight charges including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, reckless wounding and destroying and damaging property with the alleged offending taking place in January last year.

Those alleged offences saw an AVO put in place, however, police allege the job seeker breached it nearly a dozen times throughout July.

Court documents allege Murray used real-time bank transfer service Osko to transfer the funds with the first occurring on Monday, July 11 with the description “Dinner xx” attached to the $50.

Murray allegedly made a further seven payments, of a tokenistic $1, over the next week with descriptions such as “Love you muffin (cupcake emoji) (kiss face emoji) I’ll wait for eternity (love heart emoji)” and “[Woman’s name] its eating me alive I cant live like this (crying face emoji)”.

On Tuesday, July 19, police allege Murray transferred $11 with the description “Chocolate (kiss face emoji)” and when the woman returned to her South Coast home she found a package containing a bouquet of flowers, a teddy bear, chocolate and a card.

“I love you so much muffin xoxo I miss hanging out with you my best friend everyday you are my happiness,” the card allegedly read.

“Can’t wait to be home. B.Murray.”

The final Osko transfer allegedly occurred the following week with Murray writing “KitKat and drink (peace emoji) (red rose emoji)” along with $10.

The alleged victim attended Moruya Police Station on Wednesday, July 27, to speak with police about the upcoming hearing and it was then when she told them about the bank transfers and the parcel with the woman able to provide police with screenshots of the payments.

The woman provided a statement to police stating the alleged contact from Murray was “making her regress in steps she had made to distance herself from him”.

The statement also said Murray’s alleged actions were taking place during an emotional period for her as it was the anniversary of her mother’s death which, she said, he knew was an “emotionally difficult time for her”.

Brendon Paul Murray will be escorted to a hearing at Batemans Bay Local Court on Thursday.

Police attended Murray’s Flinders abode, where he lives with his grandmother, on Friday, August 19, and placed him under arrest and he is alleged to have told them he “still loved” the woman and that they were “still in a relationship”.

In court on Tuesday, Murray kept muttering “those are just allegations” and “that’s not true” as the matter was being addressed which drew the ire of Magistrate Chris McRobert.

“If you interrupt one more time I will turn off your sound,” the magistrate scolded.

“This is a courtroom, not an open chat session.”

Magistrate McRobert described the matter as “sad” with Murray “unable to accept a relationship has come to an end”.

The magistrate questioned “what part of no does he not understand?” and denied the bail application.

However, he will be out of custody on Thursday with corrections staff to escort him to Batemans Bay Local Court for the set hearing.
