A Berkeley man accused of leading police on a wild, high-speed pursuit in a stolen Audi has been refused bail, with a court hearing he’s been charged with the same thing in the past.

Kyle Alcock, 29, was arrested at a home on Nannawilli Drive on Monday night, after police allegedly found him hiding under a bed.

He has been charged wth police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period and drive conveyance taken without consent of owner.

Mr Alcock faced Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday, where Magistrate Susan McGowan refused his application for bail, noting a jail time was likely if he was found guilty due to his “unfortunate” criminal record and the fact he was on parole for similar matters.

In documents tendered to the court, it was revealed Mr Alcock is on a P1 licence that has been suspended until 2030, and that he has previously been charged with 15 driving offences.

According to the documents, the Audi A6 Mr Alcock was allegedly seen driving was stolen from a Dapto address on Monday morning.

Police first spotted the car around 7pm that night as it travelled along Ponsford Street in Warilla.

Upon spotting police, it is alleged the driver vehicle reversed at speed in a “dangerous” manner.

As he reversed, police allege the driver had disguised himself, wearing a bright blue hooded jumper, orange and black gloves and a black and white patterned scarf used as a face covering.

Police activated all warning signals, but the driver, who police believe was Alcock despite the face coverings, allegedly ignored them, taking off through Warilla.

Officers terminated the pursuit due to safety fears, and called in the assistance of Polair to track Mr Alcock from above. Members of the public also called in to assist police, with a civilian reporting a man in blue hoodie “speeding” along Northcliffe Drive at Berkeley around 7.35pm.

Shortly after, court documents state Polair spotted the Audi abandoned in bushland between near Baronga Ave.

A short time later, it’s alleged a man in a blue hooded jumper was sighted by Polair entering a home on Nannawilli Street via the front door.

Police surrounded the property and had to force entry into the home.

It’s alleged the officer found Mr Alcock hiding under a bed before he was arrested.

According to court documents, officers allegedly found a blue and white Yamaha motorbike that had been reported stolen, as well as the blue hooded jumper, black and white face scarf and orange and black gloves.

Police will also allege the Audi key was found stashed in a “white man bag”.

In court on Tuesday, his lawyer Joe Healey argued his client was at risk of institutionalisation and that it was a “circumstantial” case, however, Magistrate McGowan disagreed, saying it seemed to be a strong case.

Mr Alcock will remain behind bars on remand until his next appearance before the court in February.
