An Illawarra criminal who once broke out of Goulburn’s Supermax prison has been sentenced in Wollongong District Court.

The rap sheet of one of the Illawarra’s most notorious criminals continues to grow with Beau Wiles being sentenced to three years jail in Wollongong District Court on Thursday.

Beau Wiles, who received widespread media attention when he busted out of Goulburn’s Supermax prison in 2015, appeared in court via video link from Junee Correctional Centre where he faced charges of aggravated entering a dwelling – knowing people were there and driving a motor vehicle during his disqualification period.

On September 1, 2021, Wiles broke into the garage of a Lachlan St address in Thirroul while the two victims were inside their house.

Neighbouring CCTV footage captures a shirtless Wiles entering the unlocked garage just before 9pm and then wheeling out a Giant-branded bicycle valued at $8000.

The following day, police from Wollongong Command found the stolen push bike, and a Honda motorbike connected to a related theft, in the garage of a block of units on Murray Rd in East Corrimal.

Officers found Wiles in the stairwell of the unit where he was placed under arrest before pleading guilty to the offences in court late last year.

When handing down his sentence, Judge Andrew Haesler indicated he was also taking into consideration four related charges including; entering a building with the intention to commit an indictable offence; entering a dwelling; stealing a motor vehicle; and larceny with a value in excess of $5000.

These charges stem from two Thirroul-based incidents in the afternoon of the push bike theft when Wiles was caught after hours in a medical practice on Lawrence Hargreaves Dr before being confronted by a doctor and told to leave and stealing a Honda motorbike from an address on the Princes Hwy.

Wiles, 32, told the court he didn’t worry about being caught because he treated prison like his home, adding that he even gets upset whenever he is about to be let out.

“My home has been jail,” he said.

“It’s sad to say, but that’s where I feel the most comfortable and where I’m able to be drug free.

“I get out and not to blame the mother of my kids, but we’re poison for each other. I get on the ice, I want to get caught to get away – that’s why I don’t wear gloves or anything, I don’t care if I get caught.”

Wiles opened up about recently identifying as homosexual, telling the court that if he was paroled, he would seek to serve it in the Northern Territory where he has developed an over-the-phone relationship with youth worker in Darwin.

During cross examination, the man, who in the past used the alias, Bo Milles, said he was sitting in a KFC 16 months ago when he confided in his then partner, and mother of his two children, that he felt some form of guilt for his criminal record.

He said this time was different because he was sorry, telling the court “I couldn’t care if I get 12 months or five years, in the past I’ve never said sorry in a courtroom (but I am saying it now).”

Judge Haesler said when handing down his sentence that Wiles had a “compromised” upbringing which hindered his moral judgment compared to someone with a “normal or privileged” upbringing.

Wiles has to serve a non-parole period of one year and nine months, backdated to October 1 when he was put behind bars, while his driving suspension has been extended by 12 months.

Wiles will be eligible for parole on June 1, 2023.
