A Mangerton mum-of-one has been refused bail after police allegedly found more than 300mL of the drug GBL hidden around her apartment in vodka and fizzy drink bottles.
Police raided 23-year-old Ashleigh Jade Clay Butler’s Myuna Way apartment on Monday, as part of investigations into the supply of drugs in the Illawarra.
During the search, police allegedly found more than 300ml of GBL, as well as 15 Suboxone strips, charging her with supply prohibited drug and possess prohibited drug.
The young mum was held in custody at Wollongong Police Station overnight before facing Wollongong Local Court in front of Magistrate Jillian Kiely on Tuesday morning.
Butler cried and shook for most of her appearance, with Magistrate Kiely refusing her application for bail, noting it was a strong police case and that she would likely face jail time if found guilty.
In documents tendered to the court, police allege when they arrived at Butler’s home around 3.30pm on Monday, they were greeted by the 23-year-old and two of her male friends.
The two men left after they were searched, while police launched a sweep of Butler’s new flat - where she’d been living for just one week.
In the documents, police allege they quickly found a Pink measuring jug with 60ml of GBL, a small blue bottle containing 20ml of the same drug, a vodka bottle containing a further 200ml of GBL and numerous soft drink bottles with a total of 20ml of the drug.
Police also allege they located a Vodka Cruiser box that had 15 strips of suboxone hidden inside and a Pink diary with a “tick sheet” including different names and amounts of drugs.
In speaking with police during the search, it’s alleged in the documents that Butler made admissions to possessing the smaller amounts of GBL, however denied any knowledge of what was inside the Pink jug and blue bottle.
She also denied any knowledge of the vodka bottle beside her bed, which police allege in the documents was “hard to believe” given the state of the house.
“(There was) minimal to no furniture apart from a bed in the main room,” the documents read.
“It is due to this, it is hard to believe that the accused would not have seen nor knew about the presence of the prohibited drug”.
Police also allege as more illegal items were allegedly located, Butler began denying any knowledge of the items.
The court heard police allege Butler was on-supplying the drugs at street level.
During her appearance in court, Butler’s defence lawyer argued for her release, saying she could live in Warilla and abide by a strict curfew, however police prosecutor Sergeant Kyle Talty noted she was on bail for other offences at the time and had a history of noncompliance.
Magistrate Kiely agreed with the prosecution, noting while Butler was a young woman, she had made some admissions to the alleged possession of the drugs.
Butler broke down in tears when her bail was refused. She will remain on remand in custody until her next appearance in a few weeks time.
