NSW Suburban Rugby President Luke McCormack is hopeful of establishing a gala day of Subbies rugby by 2025 as players prepare for the first NSW Suburban Colts v Country Cockatoo Colts match.

The Colts game will be played at Boronia Park at Hunters Hill at 11:45am on Saturday between top young Subbies’s players from the city and country.

McCormack said his organisation is looking into expanding the concept to include both open women’s and men’s Subbies in a gala day style competition in 2025.

“This is the first rep match we have done in eight years and it’s great to get it back,” McCormack said.

“It’s a revival of an old rivalry. The last time matches were played was back 2016 in the opens and we’ve never done Colts before.

“The idea is to showcase talent and it may give some of them an opportunity to consider elite pathways.

“Almost all of these guys will be graduating from Colts so this is possibly their last game.

We always want to make sure the talent rises to the top.”

McCormack said a city versus country style competition by 2025 is being discussed.

“We want something that his aspirational, something to look forward to and also making it a tradition.

“The mind boggles with what we can do.”
