In 1969, a group of West Pennant Hills fathers were determined to increase the opportunities available for their children to play soccer.

So they formed the West Pennant Hills Sports Club, a local organisation to provide avenues for budding soccer, netball and cricket players.

The soccer arm of the club exploded in popularity over the next 20 years, eventually establishing itself as the West Pennant Hills-Cherrybrook Football Club.

Today The Lions, as the club came to be known in 1996, are one of the largest and most successful clubs in the Gladesville Hornsby Football Association.

Since being crowned the inaugural GHFA Premier League premiers in 1977, the club has added two more premierships (1992, 2004) and two championships (1999, 2003) to its trophy cabinet.

The main event of the club’s 50th anniversary celebrations is a Soccer Ball event at The Epping Club on Saturday, July 27.

Next week The Lions are celebrating their 50th anniversary with a gala Soccer Ball at The Epping Club.

Held on Saturday, July 27, the event will give Lions of the past, present and future an opportunity to celebrate WPHCFC’s 50 years of achievements and service to the local community.

The co-ordinator of the event is WPHCFC life member Vicki Keys.

“It’s a truly great club,” Keys said.

“Everyone at the club is united. It’s very well-run and there’s just a great continuity from the top down.

“My kids both play, my husband plays, I still play. After 17 years I’m still enjoying my soccer.

“I’m both proud and honoured to be a part of this club and I urge both old and new members of The Lions to please come along for what is sure to be a memorable night and join in this celebration and catch up with former teammates and friends.”

Cost is $75.50 per person for a three course meal or $755 for a table of 10.
