A male has been killed in a two-car crash on The Esplanade in Thornleigh this morning.
The crash happened about 9.10am while heavy rainfall lashed the area.
Police said the male was a passenger in one of the cars and he died at the scene.
The drivers, also both male, have been taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.
Both will undergo mandatory blood and urine tests.
The crash happened on The Esplanade near the intersection of Janet Ave in a 60km/h area.
A section of the road was still blocked at 1pm as police continue to investigate the circumstances around the crash.
Police believe two cars were involved, with both still on the road including a white car and a 4WD.
A resident on The Esplanade, who did not want to be named, said she came outside when she heard emergency services arrive.
“I came out when I heard all the sirens but they (the sirens) were turning off really fast so I knew it must be close.”
She said it was a dangerous bend, where the crash happened.
“It is just this horrible spot where it is an accident waiting to happen,” she said.
“It is so narrow ... and there is so many entry streets where people take risks to cross both lanes.”
She said it was awful to hear someone had died.
A Janet Ave resident Jo Li said she would not even try to turn right on to The Esplanade and often avoided that area when driving.
“Normally I dont drive there, only if I turn left toward Hornsby otherwise I go all the way back around.”
She said people often drove fast along the road as there were two downhill stretches near that spot where the crash happened.
Officers from Kuring-gai police are investigating and are being assisted by the Traffic and Highway Patrol and the Crash Investigation Unit.
Both directions of The Esplanade remain closed with diversions in place. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
