A SUPERB bowling performance led by Tom Felton and skipper Chris Green propelled the Northern District Cricket Club to a bonus point win over University of NSW in their season opener at Mark Taylor Oval.
After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, the Rangers had to work hard with the before being bowled out for a moderate 189 in the last of their allotted 50 overs.
The class of NSW Blues squad member Daniel Hughes came through for his 68 from 88 balls faced with seven boundaries and a six, while Aaron Flaherty hit a breezy 42 off 53 balls towards the end of the Rangers innings.
The Rangers defended their total superbly by bowling the Bumblebees out for just 102 in 42 overs to secure the bonus point and top spot on the Belvidere Cup First Grade table after the opening round.
Felton finished with 4 for 26 off his 10 overs to lead the way for the Rangers attack, while Green had 3 for 15 off eight overs.
In other grades, the Rangers had a good start to the season. Third grade won easily with a bonus point at Asquith Oval by six wickets after bowling out the Bumblebees for just 132, as did fourth grade on the road at David Phillips Field North by 10 wickets after skittling out the home side for just 126.
Fifth grade also secured a bonus point win by 7 wickets at Storey Park after bowling out the Bumblebees for 133 and chasing down the total in just 20 overs thanks to 66 from Jeremy Bond.
Northern District play their round two games this Saturday against the North Sydney Bears — again as one day 50 over a side contests.
