The Hornsby Lions faced off to second-placed Terrigal Trojans at Mark Taylor Oval on Saturday — in a game which was always going to be a tough challenge having being defeated 79-14 in the same fixture last year.
The game did not start well for the Lions with the Trojans scoring two early converted tries.
Another long and frustrating afternoon for Lions supporters beckoned, but Hornsby picked themselves up to put together several strong attacking raids with crisp passing and effective mauling. Their confidence was returning and they looked slick.
In the 20th minute Hornsby won a lineout, kicked through and regathered to score in the corner. For the next 10 minutes the Lions battled away but were unable to hold out the well-drilled Trojans who quickly skipped to a 19-5 lead. Hornsby scored a nice converted try but the Trojans maintained the pressure to score a converted try from a scrum pushover near the end of the half to go up 26-12.
The way Hornsby were playing, they were not out of the match and an upset was not out of the question.
Unfortunately, the Trojans quickly put the Lions to the sword after only 5 minutes of the second-half to lead 33-12 after yet another converted try.
Several sets of well-structured phases saw Terrigal go to 47-12 including an intercept try. The Lions were licking their wounds but did not give up and scored another classy try before full time to eventually succumb 56-17.
The Lions were very competitive and can take a lot of confidence away from this game.
They play away to middle of the table Woy Woy next week in what should be an enthralling contest.
