JESSICA Bird loves making new friends on the racetrack — but she isn’t afraid to give it her best when competing against them.
The 13-year-old is the latest nomination for the Hornsby Advocate Junior Sports Star individual category.
The Hornsby local was recently described by Commonwealth Games champion Tamsyn Lewis as “amazing and gutsy” after competing at the Australian Championships.
“I love to compete and train my hardest to do my best,” Bird said.
“I make sure I put in 110 per cent at every training session, so I know I can do my best on race day.”
Bird trains four days a week.
“On a Saturdays I compete in a Parkrun or West Met Cross Country competition in winter, and during the summer months I compete in senior athletics,” she said.
“Last week I qualified for the National Cross Cross Country competition, which will take place in August. ‘’
But one of Bird’s favourite things about her sport is the friendships.
“It is hard to compete against friends, but it is a good learning experience.’’
Coach Deb Walsham said Bird had an unmatched dedication to her sport.
“The attitude Jess has towards her sport, fellow athletes, to her training and racing is exceptional,” Walsham said.
“In a very individual sport Jess is an amazing team player always encouraging her fellow training squad athletes.’’
