THE redevelopment of Asquith’s Storey Park has been dubbed the ‘Neverending Storey’ for more than a decade but, after failed attempts, backflips and cancelled plans for a cafe, construction will finally start.

Work on a redeveloped community centre — minus a proposed cafe — will start this month.

Cr Nathan Tilbury said it was great to finally see some action happening at the site.

“The work will take over 12 months to fully complete but once it is done this community hub will be a regional attraction,” Cr Tilbury said.

WAITARA PARK RECEIVES INCLUSIVE PLAY FUNDING

“It will be a great asset for the Asquith community, who have experienced a lot of recent changes in their area.”

The park, which will include bike paths, barbecue and picnic areas and an inclusive playground, is expected to cost more than $6.3 million and be completed by the end of 2019.

The cost is more than $1.8 million over what the council budgeted in 2016.

Cr Janelle McIntosh, whose family has lived next to the park for decades, said the rising demand on the building and construction industry resulted in a dramatic increase in cost.

“This redevelopment has had an overwhelming build-up. People are looking for play spaces as we see a massive increase in high-density development,” Cr McIntosh said.

“Residents are desperate for these new play spaces right outside their door, so this is a massive step forward.”

The council will also conduct a playground audit to revitalise facilities across the region.
