A woman is in hospital following an intense rescue operation — which involved a police boat, three NSW ambulance crews and medical specialists being airlifted to her — in Apple Tree Bay in the Ku-ring-gai National Park.

The patient, 68, had been running a 2km track when she sustained a 15cm by 15cm cut to her leg.

NSW Ambulance said the woman was suffering from a superficial injury to her upper thigh and was in a stable condition.

“We received reports just after 2.30pm. It was difficult locating her... It was lucky she didn’t have serious injuries,” the spokesman said.

She was treated at the scene by specialists before being taken to Hornsby Hospital.

A passerby was riding his bike when he noticed a helicopter and ambulance crews waiting on the boat ramp at the end of Bobbin Head Rd.

“I think they were waiting for the patient. They were very professional,” Mark Walker said.

“I’ve never seen anything like it here before but once or twice a year people get rescued after getting lost in bushland.”

He asked what had happened. They told him “A single lady has hurt her leg running along track.”
