Commuters are set to benefit from a new multi-deck carpark just metres from Hornsby station.

Hornsby state Liberal MP Matt Kean revealed exclusively to the Advocate the State Government’s have secured land on Jersey Rd, Hornsby for the new parking facilities to service thousands of commuters.

Mr Kean said the agreement between Transport for NSW and TAFE NSW had only recently been finalised.

“Planning is still in the early stages,” he said. “It is expected to be a large carpark that will be able to support more than 200 spaces.”

Currently commuters are serviced by more than 700 spaces at Hornsby station and Hornsby Westfield — however, residents have called for the installation of hundreds of new parking spots in the CBD to meet increasing commuter population and Central Coast residents boarding the train at Hornsby.

Meanwhile, Hornsby Mayor Philip Ruddock has rallied for the government to help turn back carloads of out-of-town commuters he accused of “choking local streets”.

“More parking for local residents means the commute to work will be quicker and easier, giving the community more time to spend at home with family,” Mr Kean said.

“The NSW Government lease of car spaces at Westfield Hornsby will continue until 2021 and it is expected this new car park will open before the end of the lease.

“Additional commuter parking has been something I have been fighting for across the entire Shire. At the last election I promised an additional 220 spots. We delivered this and now I am determined to deliver more.”

Mr Kean said that, at this point, there was no construction start date for the multimillion-dollar project — however, he was determined to keep the community updated on the progress of the development.

“I am proud to be able to deliver additional parking at Hornsby Station,” he said.

“This will make it quicker and easier for commuters to get to and from work each day.

“Hoping on a train and getting to work shouldn’t be a battle and this new car park will make it easier for commuters to park and jump on a train.”

Hornsby Heights resident Wendy Paterson, 36, said the new car park would completely change her commute to Pyrmont every day.

“As a working mum I can’t always get to the station early,” she said.

“The additional spots have made a difference, but a new carpark would take the stress out of my commute.”

Ms Quinn said she is forced to walk long distances on a daily basis, so being able to find a parking spot in the Hornsby CBD was important.
