Julianne Smallwood appreciates the importance of our city’s cemeteries.

“I just love the cemetery,” she said.

“ … I’m a bit of a genealogist and history buff, so I really love walking around cemeteries just to find ancestors basically.”

It is no surprise then that the Pennant Hills ceramic artist leapt at the opportunity to join Rookwood Cemetery’s annual sculpture exhibition Hidden for the second year in a row.

“ … Last year it started because there was an ancestor of mine in the cemetery that I wanted to pay tribute to or just to acknowledge,” she said.

This year, she has created an installation of about 50 ceramic fish for her piece titled “Sleeping with the Fishes”.

“I came up with the idea to make a school of fish because fish in nature, they work together as a community or a group to kind of protect themselves from predators, which is that moment of life or death,” she said.

The 10th annual sculpture walk, which is free to enter, opened on September 1 and will run throughout the month from sunrise to sunset.

It features more than 30 artists, including Merrylands’s Atanas Djonov.
