A mobile store in Cherrybrook has stepped up amid the coronavirus outbreak by providing free advice and help to the elderly following the closure of all Apple stores across Australia.
Apple holds free sessions for seniors but now that the stores have closed Mobile Solutions has decided to host tech sessions.
Owner Amit Mittal said it was important to assist senior citizens who are one of the most vulnerable groups right now.
“We have a big elderly demographic here, I think they are preparing for isolation as the virus spreads. They just want to know how to do simple tasks like Facetime so they can stay in touch with their families,” Mr Mittal said.
“Today I had a lady come in asking if we could help her activate a sim from a phone provider so I did that and off she went.
“I’ve found they’re starting to use mobile phones now because they’ve experienced a lot of problems with NBN.”
Mr Mittal published a post to a community group on Facebook, stating their store was still open for business.
“All the Apple stores are closed until 31st March around the world. Mobile Solutions
Cherrybrook are open and serving our community. Any IOS users feel free to use our store for free advice or any queries and our team will be delighted to answer any concerns. We do offer Apple repairs,” the post read.
He said the business received a positive response and had a few people coming in.
He’s also encouraging the community to continue supporting local businesses.
“Since the outbreak we’ve had at least 80 per cent fall in foot traffic. The only place getting crazy busy is the grocery shops.
“We’re already negotiating with centre management because as a small business we’re struggling to pay rent with the foot traffic.”
He said things changed last week when news broke that a confirmed COVID-19 case had attended the shopping centre. He said the medical centre is external to the mall.
The tech classes for seniors are held whenever there is demand or requests and vary week-to-week. Updates are posted on social media or by phoning the store.
