A Sydney shopping centre has undergone extra cleaning after a patient at the medical centre was diagnosed with the coronavirus this week.
Management at Cherrybrook Village in Sydney’s north-west warned retailers at the centre on Thursday that a patient who had attended Cherrybrook Medical Centre on Monday, had been susbequently diagnosed with COVID-19.
In an email to retailers on Thursday, Michael Mitchell, centre manager, wrote: “This afternoon we have been made aware of a confirmed case of COVID-19 at Cherrybrook Medical Centre which is external to the shopping centre
“We have been advised that the patient arrived for testing after hours on Monday March 9 and left the premises immediately after their test.
“The medical centre has confirmed that all correct protocol was followed and the risk to the public is low.
“They are working closely with the Department of Health and the area has been cleaned and disinfected.
“As previously advised in the COVID-19 update that was delivered on 11th March, Cherrybrook Village take the safety of its customers and staff seriously.”
Mr Mitchell told the Hornsby Advocate that Mirvac, which own a chain of shopping centres, had also been increasing its cleaning regime of high touch points such as doors, railings and food courts, as well as checking with all service providers including delivery and cleaning staff that they had not travelled to high risk countries.
Lyn Chung, manager of Caffe Cherry Beans, said she didn’t think customers knew of the coronavirus case but the centre management had done a good job and had “cleaned everything” after hours.
She said the centre management was “checking everything”.
Ms Chung said she had also done a thorough clean inside the cafe after hours too and put hand sanitiser out “everywhere”.
“I have been cleaning after 6pm for a few hours,” she said. “I cleaned everything.”
“We are worried, but everyone is still OK.”
A staff member at George’s Fine Meats who did not want to be identified said the centre management had “done everything right” and have been “pretty smart”.
And the hair salon manager at Moe & Co who also didn’t want to be named said they had received the email from the centre on Thursday night but weren’t worried.
“We don’t have any concerns, the patient went to the medical centre and not in our shop,” he said.
NSW Health was unable to confirm the case at the time of publication.
