POLICE SAY they will increase patrols near Warrina Street Oval in Berowra following the latest incident involving young vandals.
Long-suffering residents called police on Saturday about 10pm to report a group of young people causing trouble in the park.
Police arrived and spotted about 10 to 15 youths scatter into nearby bushes.
Police said a large, wooden, seating structure was destroyed and the young people had allegedly been riding over the roof of the broken structure with their bikes.
It is the second malicious damage incident inside a month at the popular park.
On Saturday, October 6, police were called to the park at night after a group vandalised the playground with paint, stolen from a nearby sporting club. Bongs and alcohol cans were also found strewn across the area.
A group of young people scattered when police arrived on that occasion as well.
Hornsby councillor Nathan Tilbury told the Advocate last month residents in the area had witnessed anti-social behaviour at the park on multiple occasions.
Ku-ring-gai police said they had been doing drive-by and foot patrols in the area but would be increasing patrols particularly on weekends, to help put a stop to the vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
Police are investigating some names provided to them on Saturday but did not manage to catch any of the vandals.
Hornsby Council confirmed they had removed the broken structure from the park..
“Council will consult the sporting groups with a view to replacing the shelter,” a council spokesman said. If replaced, council said the cost could be about $10,000.
