A $100 MILLION plan to revolutionise the historic Loreto Normanhurst school could see major redevelopment take place until 2047.

The masterplan would see the student population double to 2000 and bring the school — established in 1897 — well into the 21st century.

A proposal, submitted to the NSW Government under the State Significant Planning portfolio, sought to include the construction of a five-storey boarding house to accommodate 220 boarders, an upgrade to the existing Mary Ward boarding house and construction of an early-learning centre for 70 children.

School principal Barbara Watkins said the masterplan would be placed on exhibition for public comment in the coming months.

“Loreto Normanhurst is a dynamic and innovative school which is constantly reinventing and changing so that our holistic education meets the needs of our students for their world and stays relevant to their times,” Ms Watkins said.

“The school has proposed a 30-year masterplan which would not be fully realised until 2047, therefore any changes — including a possible increase to the current student population — will be gradual over the 30-year course of the proposed plan.”

She said the project would help support the increased demand for education and population increases over the next 30 years.

There are currently 150 boarders at the school.

“In accordance with this planned growth and in light of our site being 121 years old, this masterplan will provide suitable accommodation for the school’s thriving boarding school and appropriate learning spaces to keep pace with the changing needs of education over the next 30 years,” she said.

Loreto has an enrolment of about 1000 students from Year 5 to Year 12, including about 150 boarders.
