Twenty-nine schools in northwest Sydney set for cooler classes

Students at 29 schools in northwest Sydney will be cheering when airconditioning systems are installed in their classrooms — although they may have to wait a while before they beat the heat.

Students at 29 schools in northwest Sydney will be cheering when airconditioning systems are installed in their classrooms — although they may have to wait a while before they beat the heat.

Meanwhile, other schools in the region will have to wait until the start of 2019 before applying for airconditioning in classrooms and the library.

The State Government announced its $500 million cooler classrooms program earlier this year to install airconditioning units in more schools across NSW.

More than 900 schools were recently named as the first to benefit from the program.

Twenty-nine schools in northwest Sydney including seven in The Hills were among that list which are included below.

Riverstone state Liberal MP Kevin Conolly said it was a great result for those schools.

“I am delighted to announce that 10 of these existing schools are located in the Riverstone electorate,” he said.

“This program is in addition to our commitment to provide airconditioning for all new schools and school upgrades and the existing policy of providing airconditioning to demountable classrooms.”

Under the scheme, schools in areas with an average maximum January temperature of 30C or above will automatically be placed on the list to receive airconditioning in classrooms and the library.

Mr Conolly said previously that was only reserved for areas with an average maximum January temperature of 33C or more.

New schools and schools undergoing major upgrades will also be automatically placed on the list to receive airconditioning.

Other schools — including many across northwest Sydney — must apply for airconditioning and request which parts of the school they require airconditioning.

The next round of applications open at the start of term one in 2019.

Of the more than 900 schools already announced, the State Government confirmed that “dozens” would receive the upgrades during the Christmas holidays while “hundreds” of schools would receive the upgrades by the end of next year.

However, there was no guarantee whether all the schools would receive their airconditioning by the end of 2019. Schools on the list will be contacted by School Infrastructure NSW about when they can expect the upgrades.
