Lauren Heggie is ready to make history.
The 24-year-old from Glenwood is the first athlete from Sydney Hills Club to be selected to represent Australia at the Special Olympics World Games.
Held in Abu Dhabi in March 2019, the Special Olympics World Games will see 7000 athletes with an intellectual disability from 170 countries compete across 24 sports.
Heggie was chosen for the squad after a stellar performance at the Special Olympics Australia National Games – she won gold in 50m breaststroke and a silver in 50m freestyle.
She also dominated at the Trans Tasman Games in New Zealand earlier in the year, taking out the 100m breaststroke and 4x50m medley relay.
Mum Kylie says Lauren “can’t wait to represent her country”.
“(She) feels honoured to be the first Sydney Hills athlete to compete at a Special Olympics World Games level. She hopes to share her experiences and inspire other athletes … by proving it’s possible to achieve your goals by working hard,” she said.
