Almost a century after her great grandfather worked on the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge Lynette Mallison now remembers his toil and admires the beauty of the famous landmark when she runs over it.
Mallison’s great grandfather Peter Dougan worked as an engineer on the bridge after emigrating to Australia.
“My grandmother loved talking about how he was an engineer on the bridge, lived in a little townhouse at the Rocks after coming out from Scotland,’’ Mallison said.
“She was very proud of her fathers working in the bridge.
“She had interesting photos of the bridge being built as well.
“So it’s my favourite Sydney icon.’’
Mallison, from Baulkham Hills, and daughters Jessica, 23, and Laura, 25, contested the 10km Bridge Run on Sunday which is part of the annual Blackmores running festival.
“To go over the bridge and in the knowledge one of your ancestors had a hand in doing it is quite special,’’ Mallison, who covered the 10km run course in 1hr 26min 42 sec, said.
“Running across the bridge is amazing. The size of it, you just don’t realise when you drive over it but running or walking you can’t believe it.
“The first time we spent 10 minutes taking photos.
“The 10km is a great atmosphere. There are people running with their different stories, for charities.
“I work in a hospital and once saw one of the patients on a walker.
“It is inspiring thinking everyone is running for a cause or fitness or just enjoyment.’’
Mallison fundraises to help FightMND.
More than 38,000 took part in the running festival which also involved the marathon, half marathon and family run.
