Junior athletes from all over the Hills got an early taste of the Invictus Games on Saturday as Castle Hill High School hosted a special Invictus Games Countdown Kids Sports Challenge.
Organised by Invictus Games club partner Castle Hill RSL, the event saw kids take part in a circuit of Invictus-inspired sports and activities including tug of war, capture the flag and an obstacle course.
They also played sitting volleyball, one of the 11 sports that will be on show at this year’s Invictus Games Sydney.
In attendance for the event was Invictus Games Sydney ambassador Gwen Cherne, who spoke to the kids about how important the event was for returned service men and women all over the world.
“My husband Sergeant Peter Jon Cafe suicided last year. During the past year and a half, I have been speaking out in a public forum about the mental wounds our service men and women can have due to their service,” Ms Cherne said.
“The Invictus Games provides a way for the larger global community to say thank you to the men and women who have served in uniform. It demonstrates to the greater veteran community that they have our respect and support. The Invictus Games also provides our serving members a way to reconnect with their community and to find purpose and hope.
“The Invictus Games is not only important to former military personnel, but also to the families. The athletes are not only overcoming their own personal battles, but also representing a community that has sacrificed for our nation. Each one of the athletes represents the injured, ill and wounded. Each one of the athletes represents the fallen and the ones left behind.”
Invictus Games Sydney runs from Saturday, October 20 until Saturday, October 27.
