The Hills Hornets Youth League women’s squad has made their first season in the newly-renovated Hills Basketball Stadium one to remember.
Last month the girls dominated on their home court to take out the 2018 NSW Waratah Senior League finals.
After finishing the regular season in second place, Hills qualified for the grand final against Hornsby Spiders after overcoming North’s Bears in a hard-fought semi-final clash.
Hills were strong out of the gate against Hornsby, opening up a 44-29 halftime lead before fending off a valiant comeback to claim the championship banner within 82-71 victory.
“It was a fantastic display of female talent and a great quality game,” team manager Allison Davidson said.
“The majority of these Hills players have come up through the ranks as junior players with Hills Basketball. Many of them playing basketball and involved in the club from the age of 10. In both their first seasons as senior coaches, head coach Darren Marshall and assistant Dani D’Morias were ecstatic with the result and very proud of the players attitude and improvement during the year.
“Each and every player has been dedicated to reaching the goal of making the finals (and) immediately after the game, one of the Hills girls shouted ‘bring on next year’.”
Hills’ Sherrie Calleia’s 27 points saw her named grand final MVP while Madison Hare was named defensive player of the year by Basketball NSW.
