Speed camera fines revealed for Hills Shire and Hornsby region

A NOTORIOUS speed camera in Wahroonga averages over $40,000 a week in fines making it the most expensive speed camera in the region.

There are currently 12 fixed speed cameras across the Hills Shire and Hornsby region.

Eight of those cameras are located at busy intersections and double as red-light cameras.

The most notorious of the cameras is located on Pacific Highway in Wahroonga, between Gilda Ave and Woodville Ave. It is placed near Knox Grammar School in a school zone.

It racked up $2,160,000 worth of speeding fines between April 2017 and March 2018 — averaging over $40,000 a week.

Only one other fixed speed camera in the region issued over $1 million in speeding fines during the past year. The camera at Pennant Hills, at the intersection of Pennant Hills Rd and Beecroft Rd, racked up $1,099,000 in speeding fines.

Revenue NSW release detailed data on each speed camera on its website.

The fixed speed cameras across the Hills Shire and Hornsby region include red-light speed cameras, school-zone cameras and stand-alone cameras. They do not include mobile cameras which are moved around the area.

A Transport for NSW spokesman said speed cameras were there to save lives not to fine people.

“Speed is the biggest killer on our roads and last year 168 people lost their lives in NSW because somebody was driving too fast,” he said.

“Our aim is to slow drivers down, not fine them, which is why speed cameras are clearly signposted and all locations are published on the Centre for Road Safety website.”

He said locations for speed cameras were chosen based on crash history and high-risk sections of road.

He added a speed camera review was undertaken in 2016 and found there had been a 92 per cent reduction in fatalities at fixed speed camera locations in NSW.

All money collected from speed camera revenue goes into the Community Road Safety Fund which helps pay for road safety programs, road safety upgrades, high visibility police operations, raised pedestrian crossings and school-zone flashing lights.
