CASTLE Hill RSL Club could house 500 seniors’ living apartments under an ambitious development proposal.
The plans for seven multi-storey buildings at 77 Castle St are yet to be submitted to The Hills Shire Council.
But the proposal has already secured a certificate under seniors’ living zoning laws that support the development of 329 units, 90 self-care apartments and 90 aged- care spaces.
Castle Hill RSL Club general manager David O’Neil said the club received State Planning Authority approval for independent living units and an aged-care facility in mid-2017.
“The precinct has the opportunity to provide the best leisure and lifestyle care facility in the Hills,’’ he said.
He said other benefits were “the proximity to transport, medical practitioners, shops, banks, cinemas, restaurants, cafes plus the added benefits of sports, entertainment, leisure and hospitality services provided by the club and Castle Hill Fitness and Aquatic”.
Cr Robyn Preston said a battle had been waging against developers proposing seniors’ living developments in rural fringe suburbs. But she said developments closer to public transport and within city centres “ticked boxes”.
“For me, this kind of development, in this location, is a much better outcome than sticking it out at a rural fringe without the infrastructure to deal with it,” she said.
One resident, who did not wish to be named, said residents surrounding the club were concerned about the suggestion of high-density development in a low-density zone.
