A man who allegedly slashed the back of a cop’s head in Gladesville has fronted court wearing the same torn shirt from the alleged attack.

A young constable John Vassallo was called to a unit block on Punt Rd about 11.20am on Tuesday.

It came after reports a woman had been allegedly threatened by Zubair Joarder, 38, of Ryde.

Police allege Joarder was armed with a knife when they arrived.

He then allegedly cut the back of constable Vassallo’s head.

The constable also dislocated his shoulder during the melee.

Joarder allegedly then went back into the unit and refused to leave.

He was later escorted by heavily armed officers wearing a ripped shirt.

Joarder was charged with wounding someone with the intent to murder and cause grievous bodily harm.

He was also charged with a string of DV related charges including common assault, contravening an AVO and being armed with the intent to commit an offence.

Police allege he was armed with a “carving knife” with the intent to “intimidate,” according to court attendance notices.

Joarder was due to face Hornsby Local Court for the first time on Wednesday.

In court, the legal aid lawyer said she had made several attempts to speak to the accused but he refused to speak.

“I did try to speak with him. He simply refused,” she told the court.

The court heard he refused to leave his cell when he was to appear before the court.

When the court officer told Magistrate Andrew George that there were “issues” in trying to get him out of his cell, he said: “I don’t want him kicking and screaming.”

Sergeant Newman told the court the victim was a police officer.

He said it was a strong case saying that the officer was wearing a body worn camera at the time.

The magistrate said he would adjourn the matter noting Joarder had refused to appear in court and get legal advice, when another court officer said the accused had changed his mind.

“He now wants to come up,” she told the magistrate.

Joarder had the same ripped black shirt when he appeared via AVL.

Magistrate George told Joarder that given the “seriousness” of his charges he could not see how detention was not justified.

The magistrate refused bail and ordered a brief of evidence to be prepared as part of the EAGP (Early Appropriate Guilty Plea) process.

The matter was adjourned to December 22.

The other AVO matter will also be listed for the same date.
