DUNCAN Cambridge from Pennant Hills, who volunteers with young students through his company’s corporate volunteering program, is a winner in the 2017 NSW Volunteer of the Year awards.
Mr Cambridge volunteers for Raise Foundation’s mentoring program at Canterbury Boys High School through tech company VMware, which took out the Volunteer of the Year award in the Corporate Volunteer Team category.
The presentation was held on November 3 at NSW Parliament House.
“It is a way to help out people who are experiencing challenges and they are challenges that most people can relate to,” Mr Cambridge said.
“I primarily volunteer in order to give something back to the community.
“I also get to meet people I might not normally get to know such as other volunteers and the people at Raise Foundation.”
Raise Foundation matches volunteer mentors with young students at risk of dropping out of school.
Foundation CEO Vicki Condon said the program helps young people realign their goals by providing social and emotional support, building coping strategies and setting goals.
The Awards Patron, the Minister for Multiculturalism and Disability Services, Ray Williams said volunteering was a way for business to invest in its local community.
“Volunteering is an excellent way to give back to our community, both for the individual volunteer and for the corporate sector as a whole,” Mr Williams said.
The Volunteer of the Year Awards are supported by NSW Department of Family and Community Services, and ClubsNSW, along with Bupa Aged Care, Etchcraft and Thrifty Car and Truck Rentals.
