ONE of the biggest high schools in The Hills Shire is set to receive a major upgrade when construction gets underway next year at Oakhill College.

The Catholic co-ed college in Castle Hill, which caters for about 1700 students, will begin rolling out its master plan from 2019.

The plan will see both a math and science building and technology and applied science (TAS) building built at the school. Existing buildings around the school will also be refurbished.

The historic brother’s house and canteen, built in 1960, will be demolished at the centre of the school to make way for the new facilities.

Principal Brother Steve Hogan said while the master plan would be rolled out over the next 10 to 12 years, construction of new buildings would begin next year.

“It has been some time since there has been any developments at this school,” Brother Steve said.

“The last time there were any developments at the school was probably 2005 or 2006.”

He said there was a need to introduce modern learning spaces which inspired learning.

“Many of the buildings are 60 years old and were built during a time when Catholic schools did what they could on the smell of an oily rag.”

He said the plan would also address serious problems with traffic and pedestrian flow — opening up more space inside the school.

A new canteen and commons area will also be built at the school either as a separate building or part of one of the new buildings. Architectural firm Urbis won a competition run by the school to help produce the school’s master plan which will finalised by September.
