Elise Bunyan was already at Norwest Private Hospital and had just watched the midnight fireworks on television when her labour pains started.
Her husband Ken had returned to their St Clair home to be with their dog during the fireworks when he received a call from his wife saying their first child was about to arrive.
Jack Cooper Bunyan’s arrival was two weeks ahead of schedule and landed him in the record books as the first baby born at Norwest Private Hospital in 2017 when he was finally delivered at 1.02pm.
Mrs Bunyan said her obstetrician was worried about her pregnancy and so she was in hospital waiting to be induced the next day when Jack had other ideas.
“I started labour after the midnight fireworks,” she told the Times.
Jack weighed in at 3.9kgs and was 47cm.
Just 20 minutes after Jack arrived, Norwest’s second baby of 2017 was delivered.
Baby Bickford from Marsden Park was a great start to the new year for mum Sarah Bickford and husband Kurt.
Harrison James Bickford arrived 10 days early on New Year’s Day to the delight of his family.
His arrival came the day after his grandfather Tom’s birthday and the day before his mum’s 27th birthday.
“He was my best present for sure,” said Mrs Bickford of her first born.
She and husband Kurt enjoyed New Year’s Eve dinner with friends and were planning to spend “a relaxing” New Year’s Day on the beach.
“My waters broke at 2.30am,” said Mrs Bickford.
Harrison arrived at 1.22pm weighing in at 3.5kg.
Mrs Bickford’s birthday was spent at Norwest Hospital, her first full day as a mum.
■ Last year, 2088 babies were born at Norwest Private Hospital with the boys, 1053 of them, outnumbering the girls.
