LOCALS in The Hills, specially those doing it tough, can save at least $45 by purchasing the Stables Bag of basic food items.
The splendid initiative is jointly managed by The Hills Community Aid (HCA) and Settlement Services International. Bags include vegetarians ($15), standard ($20), families ($30) with shoppers having the choice of which fresh vegetables, fruits and type of meat or fish to buy.
“There is a misconception that The Hills have only the rich because there are many poor people,” HCA spokeswoman Mici Beer said.
“The family bags cost $30 each and are worth more than $75 in value.
“Anyone can purchase the bags but we are targeting low income earners because not everyone can afford these every day products.”
When Staples Bags was launched here last Friday by Hills Shire mayor Michelle Byrne, more than 40 bags were sold.
The Staples Bag pop shop up will be open every second Friday, beginning from 10-11am at HCA, 92, Seven Hills Rd, Baulkham Hills.
Settlement Services International calls itself a “small team committed to empowering our community’s low income earners by providing easy access to low cost and high quality nutritious food staples”.
“Everyone should be able to afford basic food staples,” it says on its website.
“However this is not easy for many in our community who are struggling with rising costs of living and on low incomes.
“That is why we are committed to supplying food staples at very low cost to lessen the financial burden of those in Sydney who need it most.
“The Staples Bag initiative also provides unemployed people with hands-on work experience as well as the broader life skills that help job seekers to find and keep a job.
