CALLING all Anne of Green Gables fans — The Hills shire could feature its very own Green Gables, if a proposal from council is supported by the Geographical Names Board.
The Hills Shire Council called for the development of a new suburb in the growing northern suburbs of the Shire, north of the Box Hill residential precinct.
Council made submissions to the board, called for the suburb to be named either Red or Green Gables, in tribute to historic dairy farms that were once based at the site and now forms the majority of the Box Hill North precinct, according to a council report.
“The land was originally owned by Samuel Terry, a well-known historical local identity, and the property name is thought to have been adopted in the naming of Red Gables Rd,” the report revealed.
Councillor Robyn Preston said “The Hills could feature its own Green Gables”, calling for residents to have their say on the submission.
“Council and council staff have worked hard to gauge the interest of the future naming of this region with residents,” Cr Preston said.
“Families, who have lived here for generations, shaped this area — it is their land and heritage, so we want them to feel comfortable with the name of their suburb.”
Cr Peter Gangemi, who lives in Box Hill said he has worked hard alongside the Progress Association to begin a discussion around the name.
While Hills Shire Mayor Michelle Byrne said the upcoming exhibition will provide the community with the opportunity to provide input prior to referral of the proposal to the Geographical Names Board for consideration.
“This is a great opportunity for people to get involved and to have input into the proposed new suburb and boundary realignments,” Cr Byrne said.

The new suburb would be bound by Old Pitt Town, Boundary, Maguires and Janpieter roads.
The report said the alignment of the new suburb seeks “to minimise disruption to existing and future residents of the area”.
“Under this proposal, rural residential properties on the eastern side of Janpieter Rd, currently in Box Hill, would need to be incorporated into the suburb of Nelson,” the report said.
“Associating the affected properties with Nelson reaffirms the rural residential character.”
