A SCATHING report outlining 41 fire safety issues has been revealed following a Fire and Rescue NSW inspection of the ‘Atmosphere Towers’ in Castle Hill.
The Toplace development of two 20 and 21-storey towers at 299 Old Northern Rd, Castle Hill is nearing completion, after several years of construction.
The recent fire safety inspection, which was conducted by FRNSW and the Hills Shire Council, revealed issues relating to a long list of fire safety deficiencies within the building, including automatic smoke detection and alarm systems, alarm signalling equipment and fire hydrant systems.
A Hills Shire Council report into the building revealed that due to the “number and scale of noncompliances identified”, which also included concerns around the sprinkler systems, fire control room, fire doors and exit, a fire safety audit of the premises would be undertaken by an independent fire safety engineer.
“Council officers inspected the premises and identified an extensive number of fire safety issues with the building,” the report said. “As officers from council and FRNSW have concerns as to numerous fire safety issues, it is appropriate that an audit of the whole complex be undertaken.”
Hills Shire councillors voted to issue a fire safety order to developer Toplace, after council received “multiple complaints relating to the fire exit system and other significant fire safety issues”.
A FRNSW report said the current provision for fire safety at the premises was inadequate to prevent, suppress or prevent the spread of a fire.
“The lack of maintenance of the premises constitutes a significant fire hazard,” the report said.
A Toplace spokesman said the company “has no comment in relation to incorrect and unsubstantiated assertions about ‘fire safety concerns’ at our Castle Hill Site”.
