Six weeks ago Hills Bulls were in a desperate fight to keep their Ron Massey Cup season alive following a devastating 34-26 loss to St Marys.
But after scraping into the semi-finals in eighth place, Hills strung together two incredible wins to come within one victory of a miraculous debut grand final appearance.
“It’s fantastic,” club president Michael Gremmo said.
“Everything’s working well and the boys have come good at the right time of the season.”
Hills have looked like a completely different team in their first two finals games, following up a 62-20 smashing of Guildford in week one with a thrilling 11-10 victory over Asquith in their week two match on Saturday.
Having finished the regular season with a points differential of -75, Gremmo attributed the team’s turnaround to a drastic improvement on the defensive side of the ball.
“It’s taken a lot of hard work but our defence has been outstanding all throughout the finals series and I’m quietly confident we can get the job done against the Saints on Sunday as well,” he said.
Although he’s already proud of the club’s overall performance this year, Gremmo admits that a maiden Ron Massey Cup title is still the ultimate prize.
“We’re the only club in the top eight without a leagues club,” he said.
“We haven’t been in a Ron Massey grand final since joining the competition in 2016.
“It’s the highest level competition we can play in and making the grand final would be a massive achievement not just for the club but the whole area.”
Hills play St Marys at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, Kogarah at 12.50pm on Sunday.
There is a supporter bus to the game leaving the Ettamogah Hotel at 11am.
