Many people have been told to ‘break a leg’ for luck, but one Kellyville filmmaker has taken the idiom literally.
Chris Buckingham found the inspiration for his comedy web series, Agoro the Phobic Monster, while stuck indoors recovering from a broken leg.
“The idea is anyone who is stuck inside really wants to connect,” he said.
“It’s not just people connecting online, but people online connecting with the real world.”
The series, which was recently selected to this year’s Rome Web Awards and Miami Web Series Festival, follows the life of a pseudo-celebrity agoraphobic monster living vicariously through the internet.
The audience learns about Agoro as he responds to emails from fans, friends and internet trolls.
The cast — reflective of the type of personalities typically found online — includes Bleeper the troll, and former child star and celebrity sellout Buddy.
The format of the series was inspired by Strong Bad Emails, a popular web series created in the early 2000s that sees the main character, Strong Bad, Strong Bad, answering emails from fans.
Agoro the Phobic Monster was written, shot and edited entirely in one room in Kellyville, with the support of Mr Buckingham’s brother Martin, a performance artist, and his brother-in-law Bryan, a cinematographer.
“It was definitely a team effort,” Mr Buckingham said.
The filmmaker also made each of the 12 puppets featured in the series himself, after learning sewing skills from online tutorials.
“I didn’t know how to use a sewing machine, so I hand-sewed every one,” he said.
Mr Buckingham said he hoped to release more episodes by midyear.
