Fanta’s foray into fashion

These clothing items all have something in common; their bright-orange hue and ability to hold cans of fizzy Fanta.

IF YOU have ever wondered how to carry an open drink can without spilling it — hands-free — this new apparel line is for you.

Five students from The Fashion Institute were given the task of creating a clothing and accessories collection for Coca Cola Amatil’s orange fizzy drink Fanta.

The collection includes retro ’90s “poppa” pants, velvet flared pants, a transparent jacket complete with integrated straw, a belt and a bum-bag — they can all hold open cans of Fanta for sipping on the go and are all in the signature Fanta Orange colour (Pantone 151C for the curious).

The bright orange bum-bag was designed by Cherrybrook’s Joshua Lee.

“It was the first design that I drew out of all the designs and that’s the one that got selected,” the 19 year old said.

Lee, who has plans to launch his own brand this year, jumped at the opportunity to work on a real-world concept.

“I’ve always wanted to be a designer and thought this would be a good stepping stone for me so I could see one of my designs come to life,” he said.

Farnoz Shay, of Gladesville, designed the streetwear “poppa” pants and agreed the opportunity was “really helpful”.

The 18-year-old’s design is a nod to the ’90s with the side seams held together with Fanta can lid studs plus built-in can holders.

“I thought I’d bring the streetwear vibe … with the bold colours,” she said.

The Fanta fan — it is her “go to drink” — said the idea of a drink brand creating a clothing line was not too unusual.

“I kind of wasn’t surprised because I’m really interested in streetwear and a lot of brands that aren’t clothing brands are getting into streetwear,” she said.

For now, it seems Fanta’s foray into fashion will be a one-off, as the collection is only available to be won via a competition on their Instagram page.
