A young mother on a learner’s licence was so drunk she laughed after crashing into a Mercedes just 40 metres from her residence.

Elyssa Reid, 21, pleaded guilty to driving a vehicle under influence of alcohol, take and drive without consent of owner, learner driver not display “L” plates as prescribed, negligent driving and learner not accompanied by driver and faced Windsor Local Court on Thursday (April 12).

Facts state the young Kingswood mother-of-two had consumed about four Woodstock bourbon drinks when she took her partner’s car without permission to pick up more booze.

Facts reveal Reid got behind the wheel at about 10.30pm on December 3 last year in Bligh Park.

Reid drove just 40 metres before veering into the wrong lane and slamming into a Mercedes AMG, ripping the bumper and damaging the axle, facts state.

The drunk mother attempted to keep driving but was chased and stopped by a witness.

“Please don’t call the police,” Reid pleaded, according to police.

“I’ve been drinking and I have two kids. I have money – I can pay for it,” she said, according to facts.

The victim refused to take her money and phoned police.

Police state Reid was unable to keep her eyes open as she swayed – “laughing” – unable to stand without using a car for support.

Body-worn footage captured Reid’s admissions to police, admitting she was unsure how much she’d consumed.

“I was going to drive after I crashed, if I didn‘t crash I was going to drive,” she said to police, according to facts.

“I’m just drunk – I can’t drive right now,” Reid said.

Police facts state Reid continued to “laugh”.

The magistrate said the young mother was on a positive path after she was sentenced at Windsor Local Court.

Reid was unable to undergo a breath test and she was arrested at her home.

The damaged Mercedes needed to be towed.

Magistrate Leanne Robertson said Reid showed insight into how dangerous her actions were.

“Anyone on the road could’ve been affected, not just you,” Ms Robertson said.

Ms Robertson said Reid was “fortunate” no one was hurt.

“Your kids could’ve been left deserted – without a parent,” Ms Robertson said.

The court heard Reid had suffered after an abusive relationship but had been on a positive path since the incident.

“She resorted to alcohol in times of crisis, but has sourced secure acccomodation and attended counselling,” Ms Robertson said.

Reid was sentenced to a community corrections order for 12 months, and disqualified from driving for six months, backdated to December 3, last year.

Reid will have to install an interlock device to her car for two years.
