Investigators have urged any witnesses to come forward after emergency services raced to a major road in Sydney’s north which left one person dead and sent multiple others to hospital.
About 1.30pm on Wednesday a six-car crash occurred at the intersection of Blaxland Rd and First Ave, Eastwood, where officers arrived to find a Mitsubishi SUV, Holden Commodore, Kia SUV, Toyota sedan, Audi hatchback and a van had crashed.
A 61-year-old female passenger of the Holden was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
The 67-year-old female driver of the Holden was treated and taken to Westmead hospital in a critical condition, while the other passenger of the Holden, a 63-year-old woman was taken to Royal North Shore hospital also in a critical condition.
The 31-year-old male driver of the Mitsubishi was treated for a head injury at the scene by paramedics and taken to Royal North Shore hospital in a stable condition.
The other drivers aged between 23 and 49 years old were uninjured and taken to several hospitals for mandatory testing.
Meanwhile, the Mitsubishi and Holden have been seized to undergo forensic examination.
Mia Ku, 37, was first on the scene after she heard a loud bang from her nearby apartment block.
“I knew it would be bad,” she said. “I’ve never heard anything like it.”
Ms Ku works as a nurse at Westmead children hospital and immediately kicked into gear, offering whatever aid she could.
“I couldn’t do anything for the red car, the car was all mushed up,” she said.
Ms Ku said she saw life in the wreckage but was unable to render any assistance.
“I couldn’t help the red car. It was a mess.”
She said police arrived only a minute later as petrol was splayed out from the traumatic scene.
Anthea Siow, 54, a child protection worker, said she questioned if speeding was involved.
“People are pretty reckless these days. Road rules are there for a reason,” Ms Siow said.
“How can an accident like this happen in such a place?”
Ms Siow said drivers have to be considerate of others on the road.
“People are always in a rush to go home but think about people around you.
“This has such an effect on families and friends and the community - I feel so sorry for the family.”
Officers from Ryde Police Area Command have established a crime scene and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash has commenced.
As inquiries continue, police are appealing for dashcam footage or witnesses of the crash to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
