Castle Hill butcher Matthew Wright was given a real surprise on Saturday when a Pride of Lions walked into his shop.
President of Castle Hill Lions Club, Stephen Scotney, and Hills Shire Mayor Yvonne Keane visited Shelton’s Quality Meats in Castle Mall to present Mr Wright with a Melvin Jones Fellowship.
The award is the most prestigious honnour awarded by Lions Club International and is named after the man who founded the movement in 1917.
Mr Scotney said it was a unanimous choice from club members to give the award to Mr Wright for community work.
“We couldn’t do what we do without his support.”
Cr Keane said it was a real pleasure to present the award to Mr Wright and meet his family.
“It is because of people like you and your generosity that we have a vibrant and connected community in the Hills.”
She said his dedication to the many groups he supported was “remarkable”.
A shocked Mr Wright said he was honoured. “I can’t thank you enough.
“I like to help ... I do what I can do.”
He said he was giving back to a community that gave him so much.
