Two men have been remanded in custody after an alleged public shooting in the state’s north west.
Peter Knowles, 22, and Shannon Matthew Sokol, 38, were arrested on Thursday in the small town of Pilliga, about 90km west of Narrabri, following a series of alleged incidents in the town the day beforehand.
Police said Oxley officers began an investigation after reports of a gunshot being heard about 11.30pm on Wednesday near a home in Dangar St.
“Officers attended and found a vehicle with damage to the boot, consistent with being struck by a projectile,” police said in a statement.
“Police were told there was an earlier altercation at the home between 7pm and 10.30pm involving the occupant – a 46-year-old woman – and two men, who were allegedly armed with a machete and an iron bar.
“A short time later, the 46-year-old woman was outside her home with other people when the two men returned in a grey ute and allegedly fired at a car.”
Investigations led to another home on Dangar St about 5.15pm on Thursday and arrested Sokol before Knowles was taken into custody a short time later at a home on Lagoon St.
Both men were taken to Narrabri Police Station.
Sokol was charged with stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm, and armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.
Knowles was charged with stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm, armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, and fire a firearm in a manner likely to injure persons/property.
Both men appeared in Gunnedah Local Court on Friday where they were not required to enter any pleas.
They were both refused bail and remanded in custody to appear before Narrabri Local Court on July 27.
