WITH three centuries and another four stranded in the nervous nineties, the big bats were unwrapped early in the countdown to round two of the U16 Green Shield competition. We take a look at all the standouts in the final round before play resumes in January.
THRILL OF THE CHASE
Scoreboard pressure counted for little in round two, with all three century makers reaching the milestone while chasing a target.
At 3/14, Mosman were in all sorts when Austen Hiskens came to the crease, but he was there when it counted, unbeaten on 106 in what proved a lone hand. The only player to pass thirty runs in his side, Hiskens was instrumental in Mosman’s second straight win.
Tom Charles showed his class with 91 as Sydney posted 9/184 at Drummoyne Oval, but it counted for little as Gordon openers Toby Robinson (113*) and Will Sutton (54*) breezed past the target inside 34 overs. Robinson hit the jackpot, but the win was all the more sweeter for Sutton after his first round ton ended in defeat.
Hayden McCarthy (55) top scored as UNSW reached a competitive 218 against rivals Sydney University. The joy was short lived when Julian Ryan (119) and Will Hardy (49*) combined in a match winning 148-run stand.
DUBBO ON THE MAP
Dubbo’s Harry Roscarel (93) top scored again for Penrith, and once again it proved instrumental in another nail biting victory. After taking 3/40 with the ball, Campbelltown Camden skipper Kade Sutton finished unbeaten on a patient 65, but it wasn’t enough as Penrith finished three runs to the good.
After a disappointing opening round loss, Wests returned to form with a three-wicket win over inner west rivals Bankstown. Jack Clark took 2/13 as the wickets were shared among four bowlers. In what turned out to be a tight finish, No. 3 batter Abhinav Kamsali proved the star with a decisive knock of 44.
HOGAN’S HEROES
ACT all-rounder Thomas Hogan was flagged as one to watch, and so far he hasn’t let anyone at UTS North Sydney down. Following a match winning dig in round one, he then top scored with 70 against Fairfield-Liverpool before removing six Lions with his left-arm orthodox (6/24) in the Bears’ 29-run win.
HOW ABOUT A SUPER OVER
Sutherland’s Kobey Freer was on track for another matching winning performance. Alongside Marcus Jewell (53) he posted 88 in a total of 6/226, where St George’s Will Taylor (3/23) and Jackson Ingram (2/22) took the honours with the ball.
When Freer took a return catch to dismiss Luke Hill for 95, St George’s chase looked over at nine down with 20 still to chase.
In a thrilling finish, Lewis Keenan and Jeevan Raj managed to survive the remaining three overs and steer Saints to a memorable tie.
THE REST
Nilaathan Kulendran (82) and Advith Boreddy (53) repeated their opening round heroics to once again star with half centuries as Parramatta scored its second victory with a comfortable 70-run win over Blacktown Mounties.
For the second time in three days Randwick Petersham got home on the smell of an oily rag. Set 168 by Hawkesbury after Gregor Aitchison and Atharv Ramakanth both took three wickets, Randy Petes ran down the target in the final over to win by one wicket thanks to a brilliant 69 by Zakary Graham.
Toby Pallett (92) top scored for Easts with 14 boundaries in a match winning total of 7/242. Preston Lee hit 64 in Manly’s chase, but when he departed Easts never released their grip.
