A family of five, including a newborn baby, have narrowly escaped a house fire sparked by a heater in Sydney’s southwest.
More than a dozen firefighters responded to the blaze which broke out in a bedroom inside a granny flat on Mala St, Smithfield before 1:30am on Friday.
The firefighters battled the blaze for more than 30 minutes before the flames were extinguished.
Two adults were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital.
A three-week-old baby, which had been carried to safety, wasn’t injured.
The residents of an adjoining home were also evacuated as a precaution.
FRNSW superintendent Adam Dewberry said working smoke alarms should be fitted in common areas of the home, and in each bedroom if you sleep with your doors shut.
“Fires can take hold in just minutes and having working smoke alarms fitted in your home gives yourself and your loved ones the best chance of survival,” he said.
