A former Commonwealth Bank manager’s stealing spree “lacked sophistication” after police uncovered a stash of Star Wars memorabilia worth $23,000 and boxes of ammunition inside his inner west apartment.

Sascha Finn Pearsall, 37, appeared via audio visual link from Parklea Correctional Centre and pleaded guilty to possessing ammunition, break and enter and larceny value more than $15,000 following a string of thefts from December 2022 and June and July last year.

A further two counts of larceny value less than $2000 were also taken into account on a form one.

Facts state on Christmas Eve police were alerted after Pearsall was caught stealing two electric bicycles worth more than $4600 from the garage of his Pyrmont apartment.

Investigators arrested Pearsall and his co-accused on January 3 when Pearsall was again caught stealing Muscle Chef meals worth $167 from his apartment block.

During a search warrant police uncovered a box of ammunition which the pair “denied having any knowledge” of when questioned by investigators.

“The box contained several boxes of shotgun rifle ammunition, a couple of boxes of .22 calibre long rifle boxes and several boxes of air rifle bullets,” the facts state.

For the next two hours, police found more than 100 stolen Star Wars memorabilia items inside the apartment and garage including 39 small figures, 10 large figures, 10 sabre force replicas, one box containing 14 lightsabers and a vintage millennium falcon figurine.

A further 20 single Star Wars figures, three Lego sets, 15 small figurines ‘combat sabres’ replicas and two written notes describing the sales price of star wars items were uncovered.

A box filled with ammunition was also found at the Pyrmont apartment.

“Police have reasonable belief Pearsall and the co-accused worked together in a small criminal enterprise due to cooperatively and permanently depriving other residents of their belongings,” the facts state.

An ING credit card and a birth certificate police alleged were unlawfully obtained alongside a box containing the prescription medication Prochlorperazine Maleate and 350ml of Butanediol – also known as GHB – was found.

Pearsall’s lawyer said her client “lacked sophistication” when he stole the memorabilia as he “didn’t understand the value of the Star Wars figures” and said the boxes of ammunition were on the “lower end of objective seriousness” as no weapons were found.

Magistrate Stuart Devine argued while he accepted there was “no criminal association”, the number of boxes and type of ammunition found was a “ more serious example of that type of offence”.

He said other items stolen including the food delivery were “opportunistic in nature”.

Mr Devine said Pearsall’s offence in 2023 where he stole electrical items including two glass cooktops and regulators worth $800 from a building site in Bossley Park was an “amateurish offence”.

The prosecution did not wish to be heard on the matter.

Pearsall was convicted for possessing ammunition and fined $500 and sentenced to a six month intensive corrections order for larceny value more than $15000 and nine months for break and enter.

He was convicted with no penalty for two charges of failing to appear in accordance with bail acknowledgment.
