A new train station could be built in one of Fairfield City’s suburbs after Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced a plan to extend the Sydney Metro rail network.

Four additional routes were announced as part of an election promise, including the extension of the Metro West from Westmead to Western Sydney Airport, the North South Rail Line extension from St Marys to Rouse Hill via Schofields, and a line from the Western Sydney Aerotropolis to Macarthur.

Ms Berejiklian said the Metro network will provide “turn-up-and-go trains services” up to every two minutes and complement the existing Sydney Train network.

“The four additional Sydney Metro projects announced today are on top of the five Metro projects the government already has underway,” she said.

Work will start over the next four years on the early planning for these projects.

The Sydney Metro South West is currently under construction but has been mired in controversy, with Labor opposing the project and promising to cancel the Sydenham to Bankstown conversion if elected.

Labor has committed $8 billion to instead fast-track the Sydney Metro West project between Sydney CBD and Parramatta.

The Sydenham to Bankstown Alliance recently held a protest calling on Ms Berejiklian and her government to halt the project and instead improve the current line.

The group claims the Metro conversion will result in a privatised service with limited seating and fewer direct connections.

Fairfield City Council has long lobbied for a train line from the Western Sydney Airport to Parramatta, passing through Fairfield.

Western Sydney Business Chamber executive director David Borger said the fast-tracking of western Sydney metro railway lines would provide business with greater certainty and encourage further private sector investment in housing and employment in the region.
